Collaging

 Trying to go with my process, or at least that's the excuse I'm giving myself. Tried to edit today, failed miserably. On the phone venting to a friend and she asked if I'd done the collage for this book, and I admitted I hadn't. The manuscript is long done, so why do I need to collage it? Except I can't edit the damn thing... so maybe collaging is what it needs. If nothing else I feel like I am doing something remotely useful while I wait for my subconscious to get done whatever it's doing.

Collaging

Today I was kidless and, in the quiet, I started arranging pictures on paper for the collage of my next book. And as I chose pictures I'd cut from magazines, then searched the web for pictures to fill in the holes... I am amazed at what is coming to light in the story, and how much seemingly little things are adding to my knowledge of the characters. For instance, the picture of the heroine's ex-husband is priceless... worth many more than a thousand words.

Collaging & Characterization

A while back, I was over at Jennifer Cruise's blog and she was talking about collaging for a short story she was writing, and it got me thinking... while I was going through all my therapy, I did a bunch of collages that I really enjoyed doing and--most important--provided amazing insight. As I thought about it, I wondered: Would collaging for my books prove to be as insightful?

So, a few weekends ago, I was kid-less and I invited a writer-friend over and we spent the day cannibalizing magazines. She completed an pretty collage about her life. And I collaged for my novel. At the beginning I thought, I was collaging for the one novel I was writing, but it didn't take me long to realize I was collaging for seven novels. As I said in my previous post, this is causing trouble, because it means my attention is terribly scattered.
