Naming Characters
No wonder I was having trouble naming my characters in this book.
After spending three hours sorting out all the people in the book, I get to the end discover I have 50 named characters in this book, plus a bunch of unnamed ones. And the really disgusting thing is that almost all of them will appear in the other books in the series.
The amusing bit was that I've been working on this book for 3.5 years, and I just discovered today that I'd never named the heroine's brother. He's always "my brother" or "your brother". So, he's now officially named, and given the changes in the book, his name might actually show up in the book... but I kind of doubt it.
Now, I'm sure that you'll ask if the three hours I just spend was wasted or not... and the answer (to me) is clearly "not wasted". Since this book turned itself into a four-book series, plus spun off three more books, all of whom share characters and locations, by getting people and locations organized, I'll save myself a ton of time in the long-run.
Imagine, three years down the line, working on the 5th book and that heroine needs to come to this heroine's house. I could either dig out this manuscript and shuffle through it until I find where various rooms are described, then shuffle through the other manuscripts to see how the rooms are redescribed as other heroines visit the house and so on... or I could go to the file that describes the house and have the entire description in one place.
If this hadn't turned itself into such a monstrocity, then no, it wouldn't be worth spending the time to organize to this level... but since it has, it's worth every moment of organization.
So, now I have to ponder changing those character's names, which will be much easier with all the in-use names on one page.
