Rude Awakening

Posted in

This day has been a day of rude awakenings.

I've been pondering how to strengthen my hands, because I know they're a little weak, and I've been pondering how long it's been since I actually did anything beyond a gentle walk. So today I put #4-son to work hauling mulch while I weeded. Jeez-oh-petes! I found out how long it's been since I've done any exercise and exactly how weak my hands are. *sigh* Got that small task done, and I'll do more tomorrow, because now I know how to strengthen my hands... weeding! :-)

Then a programming project finally made it's way to the top of my to-do list. I've been waiting two years for a friend to do this for me. It's fairly trivial for somebody who's in practice. But she didn't do it, so I decided to scrape the rust off my Perl skills. I just looked at the date on the program I'm using as a reference. The program I printed out on my last day at Lucent. The last program I worked on... almost 7 years ago... another rude awakening... no wonder I'm rusty.

I won't go into the details of the loooooong story that ensued, and the trip to the book store for Perl reference books, and the flash of insight on the way home that solved my problem by using an extremely simple workaround that was absolutely stupid in the fact that I had to use it to get my program to execute. And right now I'm stuck again. I'm doing something exactly like the books say I should, like it worked just fine in the old program, and the current server says "huh?" Days like today are the reason that I haven't missed programming.

So, more distraction-- laundry this time, then bed-- and maybe my subconscious will figure this one out, too.
