Simple Questions
Submitted by jlpowers on Mon, 06/29/2009 - 8:08pmMy heroine looks up at the clock. And the simple question is: What time is it?
I suppose when I have a book that's 120k words long that all happens in a day, that's a very good question to ask.
Unfortunately, it's not an easy question to answer.
First I have to list everything that happens in the day, then guess at how long stuff takes, then start at my starting time and... oops! lunch is two hours late. Ummmm. Okay, how about start at dinner and work our way back. This is then and that is then, except now lunch is at 11am and the book starts at 10am and about three hours of stuff happens between opening of the book and lunchtime. **sigh**
Well, three revisions later, including pushing the starting time of the damn book an hour earlier, I have the timeline worked out until dinner time. After that it doesn't really matter because she ends up going to bed in the very early morning hours, so stuff will just take as long as it takes. But at least the daylight hours work now.
All I can say is: Damn this woman has stamina! :-)
And, FWIW*, the heroine looks up at the clock and it's now 11:10am.
(*for what it's worth)
