Minus One Kid, Plus One Kid
Submitted by jlpowers on Fri, 06/05/2009 - 8:16am#2-son took off yesterday morning and drove to Texas to spend the summer working for my brother. Son decided to drive straight through instead of stopping for the night, against Mom's advice, but called my brother this morning and Son made it there, so all is well. So, I'm minus one son.
And today is #4-son's last day of school, so as of 11:30 I'll have him home full-time. Oh joy.
Last night was #4-son's 8th-grade ceremony-thing... I hate to call it a graduation, but that's what it sort of was. It's interesting to see the difference between this school (very upper-middle class, the next school district south of where I live, we pretend he lives with his father) and the district where I live, where two of my other three kids "graduated" 8th-grade (80-90% low income, 70% hispanic, with a 50%+ high school drop-out rate). For my district, the 8th-grade graduation ceremony includes girls in long formals and boys in tuxes (although both are expressly prohibited in the handouts they send home to the parents) and there's a weight to the ceremony that certainly wasn't at last night's gathering. It didn't take long into the first ceremony in my school district to realize the reason... with a 50%+ drop-out rate, this is likely the only graduation ceremony most of these kids will have. Sad.
So, as of today, my youngest is in high school. Scary. :-)
Tuesday I move my eldest son out of his dorm and the summer officially starts. I wonder if I can convince my eldest to head to Texas, too. That sure would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.
